Course description and aims

This course gives introduction to laboratory work in life science. The classes cover microscopic observations of diverse biological materials such as microorganisms, plants, and animals, and also basic techniques to extract DNA and proteins.
This course aims to teach basic techniques and knowledge on life science as the basis not only for advanced life science but also for broad fields in science and technology.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will understand the fundamentals of life science, which shall be the basis for broad fields in advanced science and technology. In addition, the students will more deeply understand current topics related to life science.

Class flow

Conduct experiments using an original textbook. Students are divided into four groups, taking a class once every two weeks.

Class 4 Animal tissues, organs, and cells Understand the basic body plan of animals
Class 5 Nervous system governs muscles Understand the relationship between nervous system and muscles
Class 6 Cell activity depends on ATP Understand the relationship between ATP and cell activities
Class 7 DNA extraction Understand the procedures for extraction and quantification of DNA
Class 8 Protein extraction Understand the procedures for extraction and quantification of proteins

Assessment criteria and methods

Full attendance and completion of all experiments are compulsory.
Assessment is based on the quality of the written reports and on the status of submission thereof.
The instructors may fail a student if he/she repeatedly comes to class late or resubmits reports too often.

The prerequisite to take this course is that you have acquired the credits of "Fundamental Life Science 1-1" and "Fundamental Life Science 1-2".
Without having acquired the credits of the above course, the credits of this course will not be counted as the necessary number of credits for graduation.

Students must have completed Fundamental Life Science 1-1 and 1-2.
