Course description and aims

Through lectures, on-line self-learning by SPOCs, information/data collection, multicultural group work among Japanese and International students, and practical training, students will
1. Deepen the knowledge about traditional technology taking iron making as specific example, and
2. Proceed with intercultural co-learning.

Student learning outcomes

1. By understanding traditional technology, its related industries, history and culture, social background, and utilization of traditional iron in each country (including home country), students will find something that the country can proud of.
2. Through multicultural group work, students will deal with common issues, develop mutual understanding, and equip with skills necessary for intercultural co-learning.
3. Taking Japanese Iron made through Tatara Iron Making method as a specific example, students will make proposal to revive /develop traditional technology of their home countries with diversified and global perspective.

5. On/off class group work and group proposal presentation on revival and development of traditional technology
6. Make individual specific proposal report based on group proposal
7. Create individual PR medium (Poster, Video, and Website) about "6."

Prerequisites (i.e., required knowledge, skills, courses, etc.)

1.Students who wish to enroll/participate in this course should have English proficiency (equivalent to TOEIC score 750 or above, TOEFL-iBT score 80 or above), so that he/she will be able understand the lectures and actively participate in discussions.
2.Students should have interest on Japanese traditional technology (Tatara Iron Making) and its product (Japanese traditional Iron).

Priority will be given to students who have enrolled in Global Scientists and Engineers Course and to international students.
Due to the limitation on number of participants, if the registration have reached more than the maximum limit, the selection may be made based on the credits received for the completion of GSEC course.
For the preparation of group work and practical training, students should complete course registration in registration period for 1Q-2Q.
