Course description and aims

Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) organizes the Tokyo Tech Winter Program, a short-term inbound exchange program for undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at overseas universities to pursue individual research projects under Tokyo Tech faculty supervision.
In AY 2020, due to the ongoing spread of COVID-19, Tokyo Tech offers Bringing Ideas in Remote Discussion (BIRD), a new virtual exchange program for students from Tokyo Tech and The University of Melbourne. AY 2020 program theme is "Public health."

Student learning outcomes

Students will
(1) Increase their knowledge of technologies for public health (AY 2020 program theme)
(2) Enhance their problem-solving skills through group work with those from diverse academic disciplines and backgrounds
(3) Expand their academic and social networks with students of The University of Melbourne.

Class 2 Prior learning part 2 (1/20) Same as above.
Class 3 Orientation and opening ceremony. (2/12) Confirm the scheme of the program and meet with participants of the program.
Class 4 Icebreaking 1 (2/12) Same as above.
Class 5 Icebreaking 2 (2/15) Same as above.
Class 6 Lecture 1 (2/15) Deepen knowledge of the technologies related to public health. Submit a short essay. The lecturer will be read by Prof. Nobuaki Yasuo.
Class 7 Lecture 2 (2/16) Same as above. The lecturer will be read by Prof. Naoki Kagi.
Class 8 Lecture 3 (2/16) Same as above. The lecturer will be read by Prof. Wataru Hijikata.
Class 9 Lecture 4 (2/17) Same as above. Two faculty members from UniMelb will read the lectures.
Class 10 Group work 1: Guidance and task assignment (2/17) Understand the aim of the group work and decide group and task assigned to each participant.
Class 11 Group work 2: Discussion & Breakdown (2/18) Break down ideas in the group
Class 12 Group work 3: Discussion & Breakdown (2/19) Same as above.
Class 13 Group work 4: preparation for the final presentations (2/19) Prepare the final presentation in each group.
Class 14 Final presentations (2/22) Present results of the group discussions.

Assessment criteria and methods

Students will be evaluated on a pass/fail basis based on attendance, written essays,and a final presentation.
