Course description and aims

With continuing globalization, students are expected to develop a global perspective with respect to creating their career as well. This course invites instructors of related fields to lecture on the current state of globalization, introducing problem solving techniques for a cross-cultural environment based on the instructor's experience. Then students will perform group work based on problem-based learning (PBL). This course consists of 5 classes. Class 1 and Class 2 are same contents. These classes use both English and Japanese during group work.
Class 3 (3Q) focus is on issues in Europe and America. Class 4 (Summer intensive) and 5 (Spring intensive) focus is on issues in Asia.
Class 3, Class 4, and Class 5 use only English in small members of group work and during all courses. So, Class 3, Class 4 and Class 5 will have a requirement of English score, equivalent to TOEIC 750.
The aim of this course is for students to learn (1) problem identification and solving skills, (2) cross-cultural understanding skills, and (3) teamwork skills. Through this course students will explore our country's global role after gaining awareness of globalization in Japan.

Student learning outcomes

This course is comprised of orientation by the instructor, lectures by guest speakers, group work, presentations, and final reports. International students participate in the group work as a TA (teaching assistant) of each group, and provide basic information and information related with issues the international student’s native country is facing. Based on these information, students conduct group work through PBL (Problem Based Learning), and gain an understanding of various foreign countries' problems. Students gain experiences the adjustments, opinion exchanges, and role divisions needed when working as a team, thus learning teamwork skills.

Class flow

In group work, students will discover characteristics of the native countries (issues and matters of pride) through international students at Tokyo Tech, and decide on a topic for group work. Based on information from international students, the students will first collect topic materials, then clarify the background and attributes, and give proposals for solving the problems of and developing the surveyed countries.
