This course focuses on measurements of health-related indexes by students themselves, and covers the fundamentals of health sciences.
Students will measure and observe physiological and psychological responses to physical exercise.
The approaches/methods are not only useful for health sciences, but applicable to study disciplines dealing with humans (e.g., mechanical engineering, life science) .
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) acquire the ability to assess health-related indexes in humans, by using physiology, biomechanics and psychology.
2) have an understanding of background mechanisms of health.

In each class, students measure several indexes or practice, write short essay, and submit it before the end of each class.
Attendance is taken in every class.

Class 1 | Body fat mass | Measure student's own fat mass and understand the significance in fat mass and its measurement. |
Class 2 | CPR and first aid | Practice CPR and first aid, and understand them including AED. |
Class 3 | Energy balance (assessment of energy intake and consumption) | Assess energy intake by food intake and energy consumption by physical activity, and understand their meanings. |
Class 4 | Assessment of maximal oxygen uptake (stamina) by ergometer exercise | Assess student's own maximal oxygen uptake by using cycle ergometer. |
Class 5 | Oxygen uptake | Understand maximal oxygen uptake and its background, including energy consumption during exercise. |
Class 6 | Experiencing importance of heart and vision. | Understand importance of heart rate change in response to exercise and importance of vision during exercise. |
Class 7 | Relaxation, massage and easy training | Practice relaxation, massage and easy training. |
Class 8 | Summary and discussion, including brainstorming and KJ method. | Discuss relationships between health and measurements dealt in classes. Group of three or four makes slogan for important health behavior. |
