Course description and aims

This course aims to deepen students' understanding of the actual systems of Japanese companies and industries through a series of lectures given by professional company staff and study tours.
Japanese company engineers or administrators will give six lectures on Ookayama campus regarding working environment, company culture and required communication/language skills. Study tours to the Shibuya Incineration Plant, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) Tsukuba Space Center, and a factory in Kanto area are scheduled.
Attendance is required at the briefing session (at the beginning of the course), at least three lectures and two study tours.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. deepen their understanding on the Japanese industry and social system
2. understand the working environment, culture and required communication/language skills of several organizations/companies in Japan
3. understand the actual technical systems of Japanese companies and public organizations

Class flow

This course consists of three study tours and six lectures.
Student attendance is expected at the briefing session, at least three lectures and two study tours. .

Class 4 Lecture 2: May 31 (Wed) by Mr. Yukihiro Koizumi, Japan International Agency (JICA) Details will be given in each class

Class 7 Lecture 6: by by Mr. Benoit Tallec and Mr.Hideyuki Sinkai, Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation Details will be given in each class
Class 8 Study Tour 1: May 10 (Wed) 12:15 ~19:00 Visit to Sumitomo Chemical Co. Ltd. Chiba Works, Ichihara city. Gather at the bus parked in front of West Bldg. 9 at 12:20). Understanding about solid waste management system in Metropolitan Government of Tokyo
Class 9 Study Tour 2: May 19 (Fri.) 12:15~19:00 Visit to JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) Tsukuba Space Center Understanding of some of the mission of JAXA and the work of the Tsukuba Space Center
Class 10 Study Tour 3: May 24 (Wed.) 13:10-16:30 Visit to Shibuya Incineration Plant: We will go there by train. Gather at the entrance of O-okayama station at 13:10. Train fee is 195 yen (one way). Details will be given in each class
