Course description and aims
Through this course, Japanese and international students are expected to deepen their understanding of Japan and the Japanese society in comparison with other countries through lectures, discussions and presentations.
In the first half of the course, lectures will be given on the economic development and environmental problem of Japan. Students will discuss some key topics related with the lectures. In the last part of the course, students will be divided into several groups and make group presentations on the outline and solutions of important social issues of their home countries and/or Japan, assuming that they are the members of delegations at an international conference to discuss the matter.
An opportunity to experience tea ceremony is also provided to deepen their understanding of Japanese traditional culture.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Understand the history and characteristics of Japan's economic development
2. Understand the major environmental problems and the efforts to solve them in Japan.
3. Understand the important social issues of students' home countries or Japan
4. Experience traditional Japanese culture

Class flow

Assessment criteria and methods
The evaluatin of understanding of each class 35%, Presentation 45%, final report 20%
Final Report: Each student is requested to submit a final report in about 150 words in English related with the part which he/she analyzed in the group presentation. Please send the report with the title “TOJ Final Report _ your student number and name” to the following e-mail address by July 28 (Thu.):
