Through this course, Japanese and international students are expected to deepen their understanding of Japan and the Japanese society in comparison with other countries through lectures, discussions, visits and presentations.
In the first half of the course, lectures will be given on the characteristics of Japanese culture, society and education. Students will discuss about some key topics related with the lectures and visit an elementary school to see the actual education in Japan. In the last part of the course, students will be divided into several groups and make group presentations on‘Discovery of Japan,’ assuming they are the special correspondents dispatched from some international media to cover interesting topics on Japan. They have to choose topics, explore the background of the phenomena and make presentations by themselves.
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Understand the major characteristics of Japanese society
2. Understand the major issues of Japanese education
3. Understand the characteristics of Japanese communication style in comparison with that of other countries
4. Acquire an intercultural perspective
