Course description and aims

This course will be done in the Japanese language, so it requires Japanese ability at a daily conversation level. This course is designed for doctoral students to acquire basic ways and various viewpoints for thinking about his/her career. Students aiming at industrial positions and those at academic positions need common and respective preparations. However, the chance to touch the reality in the industry is much less than in academia. Thus, this course effectively teaches about reality in both industry and academia. Then, this course discusses some issues related to technology management and human resource management in a broad sense. Through this course, a relationship between your quality, ability, and interest will be learned.

Class flow

1) The course is executed using many PowerPoint slides with figures, tables, and pictures.
2) One home assignment is given through this course.
3) All the students are required to submit a report, the content of which will be shown at the end of each class.
4) All the students will receive the information on Zoom URLs, can download instructors' lecture materials, and can upload their reports through T2SCHOLA.

Overview of the career paths of doctoral students at Tokyo Tech after graduation. In addition, understand the diversity of career development possibilities, including in academia and industry.
Class 2 April 17 (Monday), 10:45-12:25 Zoom Social/business rules such as laws and standards, ethics, and social responsibility, by Akira Izumi. Acquire a broad knowledge of the legal and ethical issues required for working people, regardless of whether they are in academia or industry.
Class 3 April 24 (Monday), 10:45-12:25 Zoom The way of my life - With all the help, I never compromise - by Masaru Ogawa. How to ride through the time interval of non-permanent positions, aiming at permanent academic positions.
Class 4 May 1 (Monday), 10:45-12:25 Zoom Money flow in companies, universities, and research institutes, by Akira Izumi. Understand where money comes from, how it is used and how it relates to yourself in companies, universities and research institutions.
Class 5 May 15 (Monday), 10:45-12:25 Zoom Research and Development in Japanese industry, by Hidetoshi Umida. Situation and practice of research and development in Japanese industry.
Class 6 May 22 (Monday), 10:45-12:25 Zoom My career path through studying abroad and life events, by Mana Toma. A boundaryless career, working at both companies and universities, by Sachiko Ito. To learn the career cases of female university researchers and the boundaryless career cases at companies and universities.
Class 7 May 29 (Monday), 10:45-12:25 Zoom The road to academia, by Hidekazu Tanaka. To learn what is needed to get a job in academia.

Assessment criteria and methods

・Each report related to each class (70%)
・One home assignment (30%)
・When a student is absent in a class, his/her grade point may be reduced.
