Course description and aims

This course provides classes by invited lecturers from managers and employees of Japanese subsidiaries of foreign affiliated companies in a variety of industries, on the business activities, approaches to business and R&D, philosophies, values, and business relationships between the overseas headquarters and the Japanese subsidiaries. The lecturers also talk about their career development to date, including why they chose the company.

The aim of this course is for students to find role models for their own future career development from the content of the classes, regardless of whether the lecturers' fields are related to the student's field of study or interest, and to find references and lessons from their own perspectives. In particular, the diversity of management in foreign-affiliated companies is expected to broaden the career perspectives of students. Therefore, it is important for students to actively ask questions to the lecturers and be motivated to utilize the classes for their own career development, not just to passively listen to the classes.

The name of this course is changed from "R&D Activities of Global Companies," which was offered in AY2021. Students who have already taken "R&D Activities of Global companies I" and "R&D Activities of Global companies II", which had been offered until AY2018, cannot take this course.

Student learning outcomes

By taking this course, students will acquire the following;
1)Understand what role the Japanese subsidiaries of foreign-affiliated companies play in business and R&D, and how they relate to their overseas headquarters.

Class flow

Omnibus-style classes will be provided by lecturers from leading global companies from a variety of industries that employ engineering professionals in Japan.
This course is a real-time, interactive, and direct-teaching live course via ZOOM. Therefore, students are required to attend all classes in real time.

The following measures are taken to ensure the quality of the online course.
1.Use slides with examples and charts so that students can maintain their concentration.
2.Ask students to share their ideas by such means as actively using the voting function of ZOOM and setting a time for verbal or chat questions enable them to keep their concentration and better understand the ideas of other students in the classes.
3.Give an assignment to students in each class, and they are required to prepare and submit a report. The report assignment is designed for students to think about their own future career development based on the content of the class, so that the students will not only deeply understand the content, but also improve their report writing skills, and furthermore, the report can be used as a memorandum that can be reread in the future to help them build their careers.
4.Pick up the contents of the reports submitted by the students that would be helpful for them to share, and provide feedback to the students at a later date, with comments by the lecturers, if necessary, so that they can understand what other students who listened to the same classes thought, and thus obtain even deeper learning effects.

The order of classes may be changed or the content of classes may be altered.
