Course description and aims

This course provides an overview of the career paths of Tokyo Tech students after completing the master's program, and teaches the essential knowledge necessary for building a career for the future, such as social rules, ethics, the flow of money in companies and universities, and entrepreneurship, and how to build a career in industry and academia. The content of the classes is practical and can be efficiently understood from a broad framework, and corresponds to all career paths, including advancement to the doctoral course and entering the industry after completion of the master's program. Classes are given by faculties and lecturers who have rich practical experience in central government offices, universities and private companies.

The aim of this course is to provide master's students with basic knowledge and skills that will be useful to them when they build their careers in society after completing the master's program. These knowledge and skills will also be useful in their Job-hunting. In order to be active in society in the future after completing the master's program, it is extremely important for students to acquire "how to live" in addition to what they have learned in the specialized courses.　This is the purpose of the career development education at Tokyo Tech, and this course provides fundamentals necessary for this purpose in a comprehensive and condensed manner..

Three courses are offered in the 1Q (A1, A2, A3), one in the 2Q (B), and one in the 3Q (C). Students are recommended to select one according to their own study plans.

If the number of students who register for each course offered in 1Q exceeds 300, the number of students who can take the course may be limited to ensure the quality of classes. If it is necessary to limit the number of students who can take a course, it will be posted on this syllabus and on the Innovator and Inventor Development Platform（IIDP）website （Japanese only）(https://www.titech.ac.jp/student-support/students/life/career-education). Students who have registered for the course by then will also be notified.

The name of this course is changed from "Master's Career Design," which was offered in AY2021. Students who have already taken "Master's Career Design","Master's Career Plan", "Master's Career Design I", and "Master's Career Design II", which had been offered until AY2020, cannot take this course.

Student learning outcomes

By taking this course, students will acquire the following;
1) Understand the various career paths available in the future by listening to lecturers who have extensive experience in academia and industry.
2) Understand the general framework such as social rules and the flow of money in companies, universities, as essential knowledge for job-hunting and building a future career.
3) Understand industry-academia collaboration and entrepreneurship.

Class flow

Classes will be on-line via ZOOM. It is important to ensure interactivity between the lecturers and students in the class, so students should participate in real time in principle.

In classes, PowerPoint presentations will be used, with many examples and charts to facilitate understanding. Students are encouraged to actively participate in the class by joining polling and asking questions.

An assignment will be given in each class, and students will be required to write and submit a report. The reports will be reflected in the evaluation and their contents should be something that students can refer back to in the future as they build their own careers.

Feedback on submitted reports that would be helpful for students to share will be provided at a later date, with comments from the lecturer if necessary.

Class 3 Basic knowledge of money flow in companies, universities and research institutes (IZUMI Akira) Students are able to understand how to gather and analyze information such as company earnings, and how money flows through universities and research institutions.
Class 4 Career development in private companies (SANJO Yoshihiro)　 Students are able to understand about career development in the company and the axes to hold, along with the lecturer's experience.
Class 5 Industry-academia collaboration, and university-led startups (SEINO Chiaki) Students are able to understand the promotion of industry-academia collaboration and entrepreneurship at Tokyo Tech in order to realize their research results in society.
Class 6 Social / business rules such as laws and standards, ethics, and social responsibility (IZUMI Akira) Students are able to understand that society has various rules, including laws and standards, which are deeply related to technology.
Class 7 Career design for those who aim at academia, and Summary of the course (AKAGI Hirofumi) Students are able to understand career paths, including study abroad as academia, and the differences between corporate and university R&D.

All reference books are written in Japanese, so please refer to the syllabus in Japanese.

Assessment criteria and methods

An assignment is given in each class and the students are required to submit a report on it. The reports submitted by the due date will be evaluated with the same weight for each class on how deeply they consider the assignment and how well they describe the results of their consideration.
