Course description and aims

This course provides an overview of the career paths of Tokyo Tech students after completing the master's program, and teaches the essential knowledge necessary for building a career for the future, such as social rules, ethics, the flow of money in companies and universities, and entrepreneurship, and how to build a career in industry and academia. The content of the classes is practical and can be efficiently understood from a broad framework, and corresponds to all career paths, including advancement to the doctoral course and entering the industry after completion of the master's program. Classes are given by faculties and lecturers who have rich practical experience in central government offices, universities and private companies.

The aim of this course is to provide master's students with basic knowledge and skills that will be useful to them when they build their careers in society after completing the master's program. These knowledge and skills will also be useful in their Job-hunting. In order to be active in society in the future after completing the master's program, it is extremely important for students to acquire "how to live" in addition to what they have learned in the specialized courses. This is the purpose of the career development education at Tokyo Tech, and this course provides fundamentals necessary for this purpose in a comprehensive and condensed manner..

Three courses are offered in the 1Q (A1, A2, A3), one in the 2Q (B), and one in the 3Q (C). Students are recommended to select one according to their own study plans.

If the number of students who register for each course offered in 1Q exceeds 300, the number of students who can take the course may be limited to ensure the quality of classes. If it is necessary to limit the number of students who can take a course, it will be posted on this syllabus and on the Innovator and Inventor Development Platform(IIDP)website (Japanese only)(https://www.titech.ac.jp/student-support/students/life/career-education). Students who have registered for the course by then will also be notified.

The name of this course is changed from "Master's Career Design," which was offered in AY2021. Students who have already taken "Master's Career Design","Master's Career Plan", "Master's Career Design I", and "Master's Career Design II", which had been offered until AY2020, cannot take this course.

Student learning outcomes

By taking this course, students will acquire the following;
1) Understand the various career paths available in the future by listening to lecturers who have extensive experience in academia and industry.
2) Understand the general framework such as social rules and the flow of money in companies, universities, as essential knowledge for job-hunting and building a future career.
3) Understand industry-academia collaboration and entrepreneurship.

Class flow

This course is a real-time, interactive, and direct-teaching live course via ZOOM. Therefore, students are required to attend all classes in real time.

The following measures are taken to ensure the quality of online lectures.
1.Use slides with examples and charts so that students can maintain their concentration.
2.Ask students to share their ideas by such means as actively using the voting function of ZOOM and setting a time for verbal or chat questions enable them to keep their concentration and better understand the ideas of other students in the classes.
3.Give an assignment to students in each class, and they are required to prepare and submit a report. The report assignment is designed for students to think about their own future career development based on the content of the class, so that the students will not only deeply understand the content, but also improve their report writing skills, and furthermore, the report can be used as a memorandum that can be reread in the future to help them build their careers.
4.Pick up the contents of the reports submitted by the students that would be helpful for them to share, and provide feedback to the students at a later date, with comments by the lecturers if necessary, so that they can understand what other students who listened to the same classes thought, and thus obtain even deeper learning effects.

Class 6 "Kuramae Seminar", MURAKAMI Mariko Students understand the lecturer's experience and career path to date, find what they consider valuable from the class toward building their own future careers, and develop their own perspectives on them.
Class 7 Basic knowledge of money flow in companies, universities and research institutes, and wrap-up of the course (IZUMI Akira) Students understand how to gather and analyze information such as company earnings and how money flows through universities and research institutions, find what they consider valuable from the class toward building their own future careers, and develop their own perspectives on them.

No textbook. In principle, lecture materials prepared by the lecturers will be uploaded to T2SCHOLA in advance of each class.

All reference books are written in Japanese, so please refer to the syllabus in Japanese.

Assessment criteria and methods

An assignment is given in each class and the students are required to submit a report on it. The reports submitted by the due date will be evaluated with the same weight for each class on how deeply they consider the assignment and how well they describe the results of their consideration.
