Course description and aims

The course aims to cultivate students' practical communication skills focusing on effective writing and speaking about scientific topics. It introduces students on how to effectively communicate their research and it also introduces different ways to present scientific data to various audience. In addition to providing information synthesized from relevant reference books, instructors offer students practical advice from their own experience as scientific presenter, conference attendee, paper author, peer-reviewer and/or journal editor.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to
-learn effective ways in reporting scientific data.
-confidently and effectively connect with various types of audience.
-acquire and enhance the ability to speak confidently in English about technical issues
-acquire and enhance the ability to write effectively scientific papers by selecting appropriate contents, vocabulary and grammar

Class flow

The class has the "write⇨speak⇨communicate" pattern, so contribution from each student is required. There will be practice of scientific reporting through writing and interaction with everyone in the class. There will also be short reading assignments and some in‒class exercises that will require reactions or opinions of the students.

Assessment criteria and methods

The achievement grade of the individual students will be evaluated mostly on the basis of homework assignment(s). Class exercises and/or quizzes during some lectures will be considered in calculation of the final grade. In addition, active student participation in interactive group discussions during some lectures should also be expected to favorably reflect on the final grade.
