Course description and aims

The course is intended to focus on students whose mother tongue and/or cultural background is not Japanese. Those students will encounter various scenes which they feel unfamiliar or peculiar in their work places when they work in Japan in future. The course introduces some aspects of Japanese cultures and traditions which often form some unique business manners as well as ways of discussion and decision making. The course also covers some important aspects in actual economies and businesses, which will help students consider career development in Japan.

Student learning outcomes

Students understand Japanese economy and businesses as well as culture, tradition, the way of thinking, and characteristic behaviors. They also comprehend some unique aspects specific to Japanese companies and the reality of business activities, which help students take the chance to consider working and developing own careers in Japan.

Class flow

The course is based on lecture and discussion. The lecturer gives talks concerning each topic. The lecturer asks questions during the talks and students are required to answer them. Presentation slides or materials are not uploaded on OCWi and the students should concentrate on the lecture.

Class 1 Even with the progress of globalization, businesses are strongly influenced by the culture of each country. -Day1:  What should we think of traditional Japanese business practices, especially in the New Normal era with COVID-19? Silence is Good, Eye-Contact, etc. Questions concerning the lecture are assigned.
Class 2 -Japanese culture customs and business manner in Entertainment / Business Dinner Questions concerning the lecture are assigned.
Class 3 -Business etiquette is born from the culture of each country Questions concerning the lecture are assigned.
Class 4 -Examples of creating Japanese business customs from the perspective of Japanese culture Questions concerning the lecture are assigned.
Class 5 -Manners in Japanese official dinner, SUSHI (Advanced), TOYOSU / TSUKIJI market Questions concerning the lecture are assigned.
Class 6 -What happens when joining a Japanese company? / when making business with Japanese people: -Bowing, shaking hands, hugging, when calling out to customers and bosses, e-mail, phone, ceremonial occasion (introduction) Questions concerning the lecture are assigned.
Class 7 -Ceremonial occasion (advanced), Shrine, “Japanglish”, differences in names by region " -Wrap up of the course Questions concerning the lecture are assigned.
