Course description and aims

Master students considering a career in industry (≈ private company) or academia, or becoming an entrepreneur, will cultivate the necessary career viewpoint in this course. First we will analyze the current situation for scientists and engineers building a career (mainly in Japan), and then introduce possible important career choices that could happen in the next 5 or 11 years. By gaining an understanding of the job search process, developing skills based on the schedule for career selection, and learning what information is important to know, students will learn practical skills for designing their future life.
The instructor will introduce several reference works to that end. Students submit exercise problems, either referring to the works or going on their own understanding. (The content and format of the problems will be indicated in lecture.) Students who have started a master's program, but don't know what they want to do in the future, are also targeted. Conversely, for those who began thinking about doing a doctoral course in the future, we will introduce what we should do and do for future reference. We will think about life planning that looks ahead to not just building a career as an engineer or researcher, but also later their life as a citizen, employee, and academic.

Student learning outcomes

What should students expect from a "Master's Career Plan Lecture"? The acquisition of academic wisdom? Literacy? Acquisition of know-how? There is an "expiration date" for each insight gained from these. In this course we talk about timespans stretching from 5 to 11 years into the future. We attempt to make a lecture that aims at a best mix of academics, literacy, and know-how in line with those insights, as mentioned above.
The course is structured such that after introducing present data analysis and career building for technical students, we will summarize life design as an engineer or researcher. In addition, students will hone the knowledge for determining job search scheduling and the time frame for the entry to the job market. This course is not simply a seminar for job search know-how, or a career psychology lecture, but rather is a practical course dedicated to career plan for Tokyo Tech master students and understanding and acquiring the basic skills for that.
