Course description and aims

* This course is conducted in collaboration with Japan Business Federation (Keidanren). The lecturers are businesspersons. A theme is provided by the lecturers, and students receive advice from facilitators from the company in their group discussion. This year Fujitsu Limited support the course. The theme is “How big companies and their research divisions cope with successfully the change of business environment in which self-reform of business style from manufacturer to service provider.” Students are expected to make fresh proposals after their group debates and deliberations. Businesspersons which are engaged in R&D and business in the company support group discussions of students, as well as introduce their technologies and business environments. The 1st day and 3rd day of the course are implemented by ZOOM. On the 2nd day an on-site tour of Fujitsu Laboratory, located in Musashi-Nakahara, Kawasaki-city, is currently scheduled, which may be changed to ZOOM.
*This course is intended for the doctoral program students from all academic majors. So, a variety of members with different knowledge and ideas will be expected to enhance their ways of thinking and expand their perspectives.
*Students are able to learn the business of the company such as what kinds of issues it has, how to proceed to solve the issues, and its business values and viewpoints as business persons of the company is in charge of the course.

Student learning outcomes

*In groups composed of members with different backgrounds, students can deepen the understanding of the nuts and bolts of acting as a team by summing up and expressing their opinions about issues, listening to the opinions of others, and adding corrections in order to reach conclusions. At the same time students deepen their understanding of how to get a picture of such as industry problems, approaches towards a solution, values, and perspectives.
*Students also are able to learn the business of the company such as what kinds of issues it has, how to proceed to solve the issues, and its business values and viewpoints as business persons of the company is in charge of the course.

*After the lecturers from the company implement a series of lectures based on their experience on its business, each group of students set a topic. Each group, making intensive group discussions on the topic, deliver a presentation on its topic to receive comments from lecturers.

*This program is carried out in collaboration with the Japan Business Federation, with topics presented by instructors sent from companies selected by the federation. Group debates and presentation sessions will be held.

Class 1 Messages from the lecturers about the current circumstances in the industry, offering basic ways of thinking for problems and problem solving, forming groups, and exchanging opinions among members, assigning roles within the group, setting a concrete problem in each group. It is presented in the lecture.
Class 2 Visiting companies, exchanging opinions with young researchers and engineers in companies, group debates aimed at solving problems, analysis and interpretation of gathered information, debating guidelines with sights set on the final report, interim report session and exchanging opinions within the group. This visit may be change to ZOOM. It is presented in the lecture.
Class 3 Group debates aimed at solving problems, organizing the final report, final report session, Q&A, comments from the lecturers. It is presented in the lecture.

Assessment criteria and methods

*Students are evaluated based on reports for each day about new awareness and original ideas (70%), and the degree of substantial contributions to group activities as the roles such as leader, presenter, and record taker (30%).

Prerequisites (i.e., required knowledge, skills, courses, etc.)

Daily conversation level Japanese capability is recommended.
A smartphone app called “Buddyup” provided by Fujitsu Laboratories Limited is used in the course. So, students are required to install and register it in their own smartphones before the 1st day of the course.

*The target class size is 25 students or less due to have group discussions. In case that the number of applicants for the course exceeds 25, students who apply the course after that may not take the course.
*Students are required to agree by signature to the contents of "Agreement on PLP Advanced Practice" jointly signed between the company and Tokyo Tech. The contents mainly consist of non-disclosure agreement and intellectual property rights.
*Students who belong to companies shall disclose the company names prior to the start of the course.
