Course description and aims

In this course, students learn through lectures and practicals how people who don't necessarily share the same knowledge communicate with each other effectively at work. Students will also debate how best to communicate effectively in other cases, pursuing a good solution. This course aims to improve communication skills for situations in which Japanese is used, and is thus conducted in Japanese. Students must be able to understand a certain degree of advanced nuances in Japanese. This course is therefore restricted to native speakers of Japanese or those with an equivalent level.
Students will strengthen their communication skills through lectures and practicals. Communication skills consist of 1) obtaining consent to start the conversation, 2) successfully imparting information to your conversation partner, and 3) understanding what your conversation partner wishes to communicate. It is simple for close friends who share the same values to communicate, but often people from different generations such as parents and children or teachers and students don't communicate effectively. Upon launching their career, students must know how to communicate with people from other fields who don't share the same knowledge, uninterested people, and those with whom they have a conflict of interest.

Student learning outcomes

Communication skills will improve: 1) Students will cultivate the skills to make themselves understood to people in other fields. 2) Students will learn to sort what they understood from what they didn't understand, and learn what to ask and how to ask it in response.

Students will then take part in a simulated social gathering, doing training to further enhance their communication skills.
