Course description and aims

In the strategic management of business strategy ,R&D and Intellectual property are very important factors as a trinity inorder to proceed innovation process for the realization of the abundant society full of energy.This course aims to develop promising researchers and engineers who can handle intellectual property by taking advantage of intellectual property for the one of the key factors for the corporate value creation activity. At the same time, researchers and engineers are required to think about risks of the technologie and R&D activities , so this course also covers the basic way of thinking about the risks of techonology and the ethics of researchers and engineers.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students understand the meaning and the importance of intellectual property, key points of intellectual property management and its rough image of practical process and administration.
At the same time, students understand the risks of technology, reponsibility and accountability of researchers and engineers.

Class 1 Starting with understanding about what Intellectual property(IP) is, learn about pro-patent policy initiated by US and the role of IP for the global competitive situation among countries under the innovation policy of each country. Relationship between innovation and IP,key issues of R&D startegy and IP strategy and the image of prodcutive leader from the view points of IP are also learned. Relationship between research theme of yourself and the society
Class 2 According to the process flow of IP, key points of IP management from both offensive and defensive will be lectured. In addtion to this, the authorization criteria of IP, effectiveness of IP,interpretation of IPcoverage, IP trouble, reward to the inventor, IP contract will be taughtby showing actual examples. Judge by yourself whether the given sample IP is admitted as patent or not.
Class 3 The other IPs than patent such as rights of design,trade mark, and copy right will be learned. As the summary of the course, guideline for the first class productive leader will be discussed. In addition to the IP related issus, The ethics of the engineer will be learned through this course. Key points are what the ethics of engineer are, change of science and R&D, occurence of social responsibility of engineer, accountability of engineer, key issues of the science to technology and decision making process of risk management and social acceptance about risk. ・What you feel about R&D management and IP management? ・What is your own image of productive leader?
