Course description and aims

As lectures are given in Japanese in this course, the ability to understand Japanese used in daily conversation is essential. This course aims to provide master's degree students with a base for thinking about their future career. It is important for both students advancing on to the doctoral degree program and students who will join industry to imagine their future career, position themselves within that process, and consider the next step. Towards that end, they must first get a full picture of both paths. They must also learn the meaning of advancing on to the doctoral degree program. Students will begin with considering the meaning of PhDs and masters in a global society of researchers and engineers. In addition, students will have the opportunity to learn about the approach to qualifications and competence required of researchers and engineers in academia and industry, as well as consider a future career suitable to themselves. Furthermore, the instructor will lecture on topics for which scarce information is available to students, such as the role of technology in industry, the full picture of what researchers and engineers do, HR management and the type of people sought in companies. On the other hand, the instructor will also touch on specifics of the job hunt as the lecture progresses.

- Understand the meaning of advancing on to the doctoral program, or joining industry.
- Understand the meaning of PhDs in the global researcher and engineer world.
- Understand what kind of engineers and researchers are currently sought after, whether in academic or industry.
- Have an overall understanding of the role of technology in industry, the areas where engineering talent is active, and the true picture of HR management.

Class flow

50 participants or fewer are intended for one class.
The instructor will use PowerPoint in each lecture, make use of tables and charts with many examples, and advance the lecture in an easy-to-understand way.
In addition, simple problems will be assigned in a few classes, to encourage students to deepen their understanding of key lecture points.
