Course description and aims

・The purpose of this course is to prepare for "Exercise of Practical Research on Science Education II."
・Students need to find and clarify themes of practical research of education, master methods to utilize learning outcomes of science education for problem-solving in daily life, and clarify problem-solving process and points for its instructions.
・Students make year instructional plans that clarify instruction of scientific ways of viewing and thinking to make scientific exploration activities more effective.

Student learning outcomes

・Understand good/bad practices of scientific exploration activities and instructions of scientific ways of viewing and thinking through performing literature reviews.
・Can explain methods of scientific exploration activities by showing concrete examples of SDGs through performing such activities by oneself according to the Warp and Woof model of problem-solving.
・Can make year instructional plans that clarify instruction of scientific ways of viewing and reconstruction of domain-specific knowledge of science to make learners enable to utilize learning outcomes of science in the problem-solving contexts.

Class flow

Lessons are progressed as "Explanation of problem -- Exercise -- Group discussion" at the first lesson of each theme, and "Discussion about homework assignment -- Clarification of policy of improvement -- Group discussion" at the next lesson.

Class 4 Attend the PBL in Mathematics and/or Science at Tokyo Tech High School of Science and Technology Arranging and summarizing questions and errors found in the practice lessons to clarify instructional methods for exploration activities in Science
Class 5 Clarify the instructional methods for promoting utilization of learning outcomes of Science in problem-solving/ Make year instructional plans to help learners utilize learning outcomes of science in the problem-solving contexts Share findings in the fourth lessons to summarize the points to design instructional materials / Making year plans by focusing on instructions of scientific ways of viewing and thinking and 5W1H framework of domain-specific knowledge

Prerequisites (i.e., required knowledge, skills, courses, etc.)

・Students who do not intend to take teacher’s license of lower secondary schools cannot take this course.
・Students are required to earn every credit (except "Method of Teaching Science IV") for related courses of LAT.
・Students are required to earn more than 20 credits for four areas (physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science) of related courses of "Science".
・Students are required to send an application e-mail that includes ID, name, major program, and e-mail address to following contact address until one week before the first lesson and attend the first lesson.
・Part-time students who can take this course are only graduates of Tokyo Tech.
・Students cannot take both this course and "Exercise of Practical Research on Mathematics Education I" in the same year.
