Course description and aims

To master the method of planning and instruction of special activities classes in school through lectures and group discussions.
As for the Period for Integrated Study (PIS), students need to understand the roles and objectives of the PIS, to be able to distinguish appropriate/inappropriate design of PIS lessons, and to discuss effective method to support exploration activities.

Student learning outcomes

As for the special activities:
-To obtain basic knowledge of special activities as an important group activities in school.
-To be able to help students to participate in better group activities.
As for the Period for Integrated Study:
- To be able to explain differences between PIS and subject-area classes, and reasons for required cooperation between PIS and each subject area, as well as Time for Special Activities
- To be able to point out required methods in the designed curriculum and unit plan to achieve its objectives by presenting an example
- To be able to plan and perform methods of instruction and assessment to support student’s learning activities corresponding to the processes and situations of problem-solving.

Class flow

Class will be given as an intensive course in two or three days.
The class will consist of the lectures by the instructor and the group discussions.

Class 5 To examine and discuss a sample lesson plan; its strengths and weaknesses; how to improve it. Proposal to make PIS more effective
Class 6 To compare appropriate PIS designs; Differences between JHS and HS;Discussion based on the Warp and Woof model of problem-solving Proposing appropriate themes of problem-solving activities for PIS
Class 7 To understand the principles and the perspectives on designing unit plans based on the checklist Developing an improved plan from a sample lesson plan based on the checklist
Class 8 To check the homework assignments and their explanations by the jigsaw method To clarify appropriate designs based on the model learning objectives, corresponding learning activities, and methods of instructions Developing an revised plan and checklist
