Course description and aims

Through text readings and discussion, students will learn the knowledge and communication skills necessary to work smoothly in a multicultural environment.
This course examines the conflicts of international graduates from Japanese universities and Japanese employees working in a global environment.The course further examines how they try to solve such conflicts, as well as how they feel the significance of their own existence in their workplace from their respective viewpoint.

Student learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:
1)deepen their understanding of communication and interpersonal relationship which are quite essential when they live and work in a multicultural environment.
2)acquire communication skills Japanese language proficiency for multicultural collaboration by learning diverse opinions and values through discussions with other students.

Class flow

The first half of each class will be a lecture, and the second half will be a discussion in groups. The guest speaker will give a lecture in the sixth class. Students are expected to read the materials assigned for each class. The details will be explained in the first class.Attendance at the first class is compulsory for students planning to take this course.The course schedule described below may be changed depending on the number of students enrolled in the course.

Class 1 Orientation - Foreigners working in multicultural business situations in Japan Have an understanding on the situation of people from diverse cultural backgrounds working in Japanese society.
Class 2 Conflicts, resolutions, working values and awareness of international graduates working in a global environment The current state and subject will be understood from research and reports related to the theme, and future issues will be discussed.
Class 3 Conflicts, resolutions, working values of Japanese employees working in a global environment The current state and subject will be understood from research and reports related to the theme, and future issues will be discussed.
Class 4 Japanese employees' awareness of the presence of foreign employees The current state and subject will be understood from research and reports related to the theme, and future issues will be discussed.
Class 5 Diversity management The current state and subject will be understood from research and reports related to the theme, and future issues will be discussed.
Class 6 Lecture by the guest speaker and discussion Guest speakers will deepen our understanding of the challenges faced by Japanese companies and society in globalization.

Assessment criteria and methods

Evaluation will be based on the comment paper and the final report. Students are required to attend two-thirds of classes and submit the final report.
