Course description and aims
This course is aimed at students who have finished the study of basic level Japanese with knowledge of about 250 basic Kanji. Students will learn 250 Kanji often used for the study of lower-intermediate level Japanese language as well as for daily life and campus life including their research activities. Students will learn the pronunciation and the meaning of each Kanji and Kanji combinations, and will further expand their knowledge of Kanji system and skills for recognizing Kanji which will lead them to achieve their autonomous Kanji studying.
Student learning outcomes
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) pronounce and understand various Kanji combination words often used for the study of lower-intermediate level and N3 level of JLPT;
2) guess the pronunciation and the meaning of Kanji combination words which they haven't seen before;
3) expand their vocabulary.

Class flow
Students will learn 15 new kanji in each class. Through activities and assignments in the class, students will acquire knowledge of kanji and skills for actual usage. Students are given assignments in every class, and are required to take the final exam.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)
To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 30-60 minutes preparing for class and another 30-60 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Students are required to attend more than 60% of the scheduled classes to take the final exam.

Prerequisites (i.e., required knowledge, skills, courses, etc.)
Only for international students whose Japanese proficiency is equivalent to lower- intermediate level (with knowledge of around 250 kanji). Applicants who have passed Japanese kanji: Basic 2 are, in principle, accepted in this course, however, new applicants are required to take Kanji level test. This course is for students who do not use kanji in their first language.
