Course description and aims

This course is aimed at intermediate level students who have studied about 400 kanji words. Students will learn kanji words which are:
- often used in daily life and campus life including their research activities;
- useful for the intermediate level study of Japanese as well.
Students will learn how to expand their knowledge of kanji system and skills for recognizing kanji which will lead them to achieve their autonomous Kanji studying.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) pronounce and understand various kanji combination words used at the intermediate level and (N3)-N2 level of JLPT;
2) catch the main idea of sentences using kanji words as a clue;
3) guess the pronunciation and the meaning of kanji combination words which they have not seen before;
4) expand their vocabulary.

Class flow

Students will learn 13 new kanji in each class. Through activities and assignments in the class, students will acquire knowledge of kanji and the skills for actual usage. Students are given assignments in every class, and are required to take the final exam.

Class 3 Kanji for verbs(満・欠・違・効・慣・・・)/ Kanji skill (Kanji combination verbs) Students will learn Kanji shape, pronunciation, meaning, combination and Kanji skill (compound verbs written in Kanji).
Class 4 Kanji for verbs(保・配・伝・記・代・・・)/ Kanji skill (Kanji combination adjectives) Students will learn Kanji shape, pronunciation, meaning, combination, and Kanji skill (kanji combination adjectives).
Class 5 Kanji for verbs(測・防・求・支・任・・・)/ Kanji skill (Kanji with same pronunciation) Students will learn Kanji shape, pronunciation, meaning, combination and Kanji skill (kanji with the same pronunciation).
Class 6 Kanji for nouns(相・情・報・帯・域・・・)/ Kanji skill (Kanji of synonyms) Students will learn Kanji shape, pronunciation, meaning, combination and Kanji skill (kanji of synonyms).

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Class performance 20%, Assignment 20%, Final examination 60%
Students are required to attend more than 60% of the scheduled classes to take the final exam.

Prerequisites (i.e., required knowledge, skills, courses, etc.)

Only for international students whose Japanese proficiency is equivalent to intermediate level, having knowledge of about 450 kanji. Applicants who have passed Topic Oriented Japanese 28 / Japanese Kanji: Intermediate 2 are, in principle, accepted in this course, however, new applicants are required to take Kanji level test.
