Course description and aims

This course is aimed at students who have finished Topic Oriented Japanese 27 / Japanese Kanji : Intermediate 1 (or those who have studied about 350 kanji). Students will learn Kanji often used for the study of lower-intermediate level Japanese courses as well as for daily life and campus life including their research activities. The course will further expand students' knowledge of Kanji system and skills for recognizing Kanji which will lead them to achieve their autonomous Kanji studying.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) pronounce and understand various Kanji combination words often used for the study of lower-intermediate level and N3 level of JLPT;
2) grasp the main idea of sentences using students' Kanji knowledge as a clue;
3) guess the pronunciation and the meaning of Kanji combination words which they haven't seen before;
4) expand their vocabulary.

Class flow

Students will learn 13 new kanji in each class. Through activities and assignments in the class, students will acquire knowledge of kanji and skills for actual usage. Students are given assignments in every class, and are required to take the final exam.

Class 3 Kanji for verbs (残・比・焼・勝・守・・・)/ Kanji skill (prefix & suffix) Students will learn Kanji shape, pronunciation, meaning, combinations and Kanji skill (prefix and suffix).
Class 4 Kanji for social life (値・段・払・税・申・・・)/ Kanji skill (Kanji with same pronunciation) Students will learn Kanji shape, pronunciation, meaning, combinations and Kanji skill (Kanji with same pronunciation).
Class 5 Kanji for verbs (吸・混・捨・定・加・・・)/ Kanji skill (writing) (的・・・) Students will learn Kanji shape, pronunciation, meaning and combinations. Writing and reading activity
Class 6 Kanji for dairy words(平・成・若・愛・礼・・・)/ Kanji skill (reading activity) Students will learn Kanji shape, pronunciation, meaning and combinations. Writing and reading activity

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Students are required to attend more than 60% of the scheduled classes to take the final exam.

Only for international students whose Japanese proficiency is equivalent to lower-intermediate level, having knowledge of about 350 kanji. Applicants who have not taken Topic Oriented Japanese 27 / Japanese Kanji : Intermediate 1 are required to take Kanji level test.
