You will learn more natural expressions and idiomatic expressions that are balanced and both spoken and written.

Class flow

After explanations by an instructor, you will discuss a theme with your partner. Followed by pair work, you will make a short presentation of the discussion outcome.

Class 1 Guidance Describe the difficulty of idiomatic phrases or expressions.
Class 2 Natural expressions found in TV dramas Find a TV drama and write out some natural expressions from it.
Class 3 Metaphorical expression in the novel Choose your favorite novel and collect metaphoric expressions.
Class 4 Onomatopoeia and mimic words in manga Choose your favorite manga and collect onomatopoeia/mimetic words.
Class 5 Poetic expression in J pop songs Choose your favorite songs and collect expressions different from everyday conversation.
Class 6 Expressions in Proverbs and Story Proverbs Find and introduce a story that is the source of the proverbs.
Class 7 How to use new words in buzzwords Look for buzzwords and introduce why they became buzzwords.
Class 8 Summary Make a report on the relationship between language and culture based on what you learned in class.

Assessment criteria and methods

We evaluate based on 100% of attendance, and then the pass/fail is determined by discussion, final report presentation.
Although evaluation is severe, classes are fun.
