Course description and aims

This course is for intermediate level students who have studied about 400 kanji items. Students will learn kanji items which we often used in daily life and campus life including their research activities, and which are useful for the intermediate level study of Japanese as well. Students will learn how to expand their knowledge of kanji system, recognition skills of kanji, and how to achieve independent kanji learning.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to
1) pronounce and understand various kanji combination words at the intermediate level and (N3)-N2 level of JLPT.
2) catch the main idea of sentences using kanji words as a clue.
3) guess the pronunciation and the meaning of kanji combination words at sight even if not yet unknown.
4) expand their vocabulary.

Class flow

Students will learn 13 new kanjis in each class. Through activities and assignments in the class, they will acquire the knowledge of kanji and the skills for its usage. The instructor will assign homework at the end of each lecture. Students must take an examination at the final class.

Prerequisites (i.e., required knowledge, skills, courses, etc.)

Only for international students who have the ability of Japanese language at intermediate level,with about 400 kanjis. Applicants who have passed the class of TOJ28 are, in principle, accepted in this course. New applicants are basically required to take kanji level check test.
