Course description and aims

Through watching entertainment/educational TV programs (using audio-visual material), we will learn traditional Japanese culture, modern lifestyle, and underlying values of the Japanese people. Also, we will practice improving listening skills at the intermediate level.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:
1. Enrich life in Japan by understanding both external and internal aspects of Japanese culture. 2. Develop appropriate listening skills of spoken Japanese used in real life.

It is recommended that each student set one's own goal on an understanding of the culture and language of Japan and to achieve that goal by deepening one's study.

Keywords

Class flow

We will watch a DVD which highlights one topic at a class. Initially, focus on grasping a general idea of the whole story, rather than understanding every single word you hear. Handouts will help you with precise comprehension. On the other hand, maintain your viewpoint while watching, because sometimes there is no simple right answer as with a “listening quiz.” You are encouraged to share your opinions on the topic. Homework will be assigned.
