Course description and aims

The aims of this course is to acquire advanced academic Japanese skills. specifically, you will learn how to discuss issues and summarize the argument in the discussion on a scientist who had an impact on you.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to acquire a basic skill that allows you to organize a seminar: how to control audience's opinions; how to summarize issues in discussions.

Class flow

Class will be conducted with pairs or small groups. Class will start with lecture, followed by pair work. Students will make a presentation of the discussion outcome.

Class 1 Guidance Analyze the style and procedure and discussion in a seminar browsing video sites such as YouTube.
Class 2 Do research on the life of a scientist who affects your life. Analyze the differences between a discussion in a seminar and a discussion which you have ever experiened.
Class 3 Make your points clear, and prepare for your seminar. Participate in a seminar and analyze what should be improved.
Class 4 Seminar 1 Participate in a seminar and analyze what should be improved.
Class 5 Seminar 2 Participate in a seminar and analyze what should be improved.
Class 6 Seminar 3 Summarize what you should improve based on your feedback report.
Class 7 Feedback. Share and discuss the improvement of methods of discussion in a seminar with your classmates.
Class 8 Discuss how your or your peer's Japanese is improved through your seminar. Write a report about the methods of discussion in a seminar.
