Course description and aims

This course is designed for students who have learned survival Japanese to get to the next step. Students will learn basic Japanese grammar and vocabulary for everyday situation and also some information about Japanese culture and society. Kanji learning also will be prepared.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to: ・Understand basic Japanese structure, grammar and vocabulary and will be able to use it on a daily basis. ・Speak in Japanese about daily activities, describe state of things. ・Express preference. ・Ask about existence or location of people and things. ・Invite friends. ・Read and write 50 kanji.

Class flow

Students will gain the knowledge of basic Japanese language structure and grammatical items to promote language proficiency. To prepare for the class, students should read the course schedule and check up on new terms in the reference book; Minna no Nihongo 2nd version:Translation & Grammatical Notes. Students are given assignments and should keep it a habit to the following continuity; preview, attending a class and review. At the final class, students are requested to make a short presentation.

Class 3 Verbs of giving and receiving. N o agemasu. N o moraimasu.
Class 4 Adjective sentence. i-Adjective/na-Adjictive desu.
Class 5 Like/Good and dislike/bad. N ga suki desu. N ga kirai desu.
Class 6 Existence and location. N(place) ni N(thing/person) ga arimasu/imasu. N(thing/person) wa N(place) ni arimasu/imasu.
Class 7 Numbers and time period. N(number)nin/hiki/ko/dai/mai/hon
Class 8 Impressions on past event. Want and want to do. V-mashita. N ga hoshii desu. V-tai desu.
