Course description and aims

In this lecture, various sentences written in German are read. Students who have learned basic German grammar aim to establish their knowledge and improve their reading comprehension skills toward communication practice. The understanding to the culture of the German-speaking world is deepened through the material.

Class flow

1. Students will be sent text materials created by their instructor each time at OCW-i the day before class. (The content of the text is plain German sentences and a description of the grammatical knowledge necessary to read them.) Students should read the commentary, apply the contents, translate the German sentence into Japanese, and submit it in OCW-i. (Sentences are the amount that can be read and translated during class hours.)
2. Students can write questions to assignments (and they can also ask questions by email)
3. In the next material, the instructor will explain translation examples, answers to questions, and common errors. (depending on the content of the questions, the instructor may answer them by email).

Textbook(s)

The text of the teaching materials created by the instructor will be sent through OCW-i each time on the day before class. (In the text, the instructor will explain the assignment sentences and notes, examples of translations of the previous assignment sentences, answers to questions, and common errors.)

Reference books, course materials, etc.

Please make great use of the dictionary for translation. You should look not only at the meaning of the word, but also at the example sentence.

Assessment criteria and methods

Based on all submissions, the instructor will evaluate the accuracy of students' translations and reading comprehension. (Students should read the explanation of the materials, translate german text into Japanese, and submit it as an assignment while using a dictionary.)
