Course description and aims

"Spanish: Basic Course 3'' is designed for students who have finished "Spanish: Basic Course 2''. By the end of the quarter, students can expect to express themselves in simple phrases and sentences, using basic verbs, including several irregular verbs and several tenses other than present tense. You will learn to read and write simple texts in present tense, and the basic rules of the Spanish grammar.

Student learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will have acquired the basics of Spanish pronunciation, spelling, and an overview of the Spanish grammar, even if you are not capable yet to handle all aspects of your knowledge. You will also be able to read and write simple texts well enough to carry out the routine tasks of daily life and understand some important basics of Spanish grammar.

Class flow

The instructor explains the main grammatical points of the day. Students will solve some quizzes on related topics, and also read texts in classroom to get a better understanding of each topic. The instructor also tends to show a movie or put some music in class so that students get acquainted to the culture and society of Spanish speaking countries. Attendance is required in every class.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.

Assessment criteria and methods

Learning achievement is evaluated by two exams (midterm and final) (35% and 45%, respectively) and by the end of term essay (20%).
