講義の概要とねらい
TOEFLのReadingとWritingの各セクションの試験形式・内容に留意しつつ、英語力を向上させる。
TOEFLのReading SectionおよびWriting Sectionの得点を向上させると共に、英語圏の大学で教育を受けるのに必要な英語力を身につけることを目指す。
到達目標
この授業科目は、次のような知識や能力を身につけることを目指す。
・readingおよびwriting セクションを中心にTOEFLテストがどのようなものかをもとに、好成績を残すための取り組みを実践できる。
・学問分野における英語の知識を広げると共に、英語の全般的なreadingとwritingに応用できる。

| This course will be taught by a bilingual journalist who has been reporting and writing in both English and Japanese on a wide range of issues for a variety of publications. Throughout the course, the instructor will use her knowledge and expertise in the art of story-telling, to help students acquire communication skills that are necessary for presenting ideas effectively and clearly in English to people from culturally diverse backgrounds. |

授業の進め方
We continue to explore various issues using readings, audio lectures, and discussions. Students are expected to study the vocabulary, complete all readings or TOEFL exercises, and come to class prepared to express their opinions. In addition, students are encouraged to develop speed-reading skills and expand academic vocabulary.

| 第3回 | TOEFL reading strategy: Understanding the paraphrase question Developing essay-writing skills Vocabulary quiz | Students are responsible for understanding the definition of paraphrase question and completing the assigned exercises. They are also expected to review the vocabulary covered for the quiz. |
| 第4回 | Reading test 1 Developing essay-writing skills | Students are expected to review the three questions types: inference, purpose, and paraphrase. |
| 第5回 | TOEFL reading strategy: Understanding the summary question Writing exercise | Students are responsible for understanding the definition of summary question and completing the assigned exercises. |
| 第6回 | TOEFL reading strategy: Understanding the organization question Writing exercise | Students are responsible for understanding the definition of organization question and completing the assigned exercises. |

授業時間外学修（予習・復習等）
学修効果を上げるため，教科書や配布資料等の該当箇所を参照し，「毎授業」授業内容に関する予習と復習（課題含む）をそれぞれ概ね100分を目安に行うこと。

成績評価の基準及び方法
Class participation: 20% (Evaluation will be based on attitude, contribution, improvement, and a willingness to learn.)
Reading tests: 30%
Writing assignment: 50%
