講義の概要とねらい
この授業はTOEFLをまったく知らないあるいは受験したことがない学生向けのTOEFL入門の授業である。英語の四技能のうち、特に聴解力と発話力の基礎力を磨きながら、TOEFLのテスト形式になれることを目指す。また短期留学に必要な基礎的な語彙を学ぶ。
到達目標
・TOEFLの出題形式や内容に親しむこと。
・クラス内でのペアワークやグループワークを通して聴解力と発話力を向上させること。
・短いスピーチや会話を聴き、要点を理解したうえでその要点を短文で要約し英語を使って表現することができる。

| This course will be taught by a bilingual journalist who has been reporting and writing in both English and Japanese on a wide range of issues for a variety of publications. Throughout the course, the instructor will use her knowledge and expertise in the art of story-telling, to help students acquire communication skills that are necessary for presenting ideas effectively and clearly in English to people from culturally diverse backgrounds. |

授業の進め方
This course is designed to help students develop communication skills that are applicable to the TOEFL iBT test. Each week, we will explore a different issue using audio lectures, news clips, readings, and discussion. In addition, there will be a vocabulary quiz (not part of the grading), which is designed to help students expand their academic vocabulary. Throughout the course, students will also learn to develop intercultural competence, one of the most important skills needed to be able to collaborate with people from culturally diverse backgrounds.

| 第2回 | TOEFL listening strategy: Understanding the main points Speaking exercises | Students are responsible for reading all the handouts. As for the speaking exercise, they will be asked to speak on a given topic during the class. |
| 第3回 | TOEFL listening strategy: Developing note-taking skills Pronunciation exercises | Students will learn how to pronounce some of the most challenging English sounds. |
| 第4回 | TOEFL speaking strategy: Identifying the topic and the task Listening exercises | Students are responsible for reading all the handouts. |
| 第5回 | TOEFL speaking strategy: Making an outline Vocabulary review | Students are responsible for reviewing all the vocabulary covered. |
| 第6回 | Speech (Group A) Listening Test 2 | Students assigned to Group A will deliver a speech on a given topic. All students are expected to be able to demonstrate all the listening skills in the Speaking Test. |
| 第7回 | Speech (Group B) Listening test 2 | Students assigned to Group B will deliver a speech on a given topic. All students are expected to be able to demonstrate all the listening skills in the Speaking Test. |

Class participation: 30% (Evaluation will be based on attitude, contribution, improvement, and a willingness to learn.)
Listening test: 25%
