Course description and aims

Based on English 7, English 8 is designed to improve students’ English language skills for academic purposes and provide them with more knowledge in relevant areas. The materials include topics such as international and intercultural issues as well as current topics of science and technology. Expectations require students to practice: reading academic articles, listening to English lectures, speaking before an audience, and developing skills to write paragraphs and short essays.

Class flow

Speak about social issues and other news item topics in small groups. Listen to various kinds of English in TV news broadcasts, using visual clues to supplement understanding. Practice note-taking while listening and viewing.

Class 4 short mid-quarter quiz Unit 11, Gay marriage in Ireland Review and quiz on Units 8-10 materials. Listening, vocabulary and note-taking related to a British TV news item on same-sex marriage and the Republic of Ireland.
Class 5 Unit 13, The threat to Antarctic penguins Listening, vocabulary and note-taking related to a British TV news item on Southern Hemisphere penguins.
Class 6 Unit 14, English for Muslim women immigrants Listening, vocabulary and note-taking related to a British TV news item on second-language learning by female immigrants.
Class 7 review and test or final task Review of units 8-14 (omitting unit 12) materials. Demonstrate knowledge of contents, vocabulary and expressions in the news items. Preparation of a speaking exercise on topics related to the materials.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
