講義の概要とねらい
この授業科目では、大学レベルでの学修・研究活動を英語で行うために必要な英語運用力のいっそうの向上を目的とした演習を行う。国際意識の醸成に資する目的で海外事情・異文化理解に関する教材を用いるほか、科学技術に関する英語素材を用いる。英語の読解力と聴解力の向上を目指す訓練に加え、口頭の発話練習および構成を考えながらパラグラフや短いエッセイを書く訓練を行うことによって、英語での発信に習熟することも目指す。
到達目標
この授業科目では、次のような英語の知識と運用力およびコミュニケーションへの姿勢を身につけることが目標となる。
・英語で自己表現する力がつく
・パラグラフや短いエッセイを書く力がつく
・英語の講義を理解する聴解力がつく
・英文を読みこなすための方法が身につく

授業の進め方
Usually, we will start the lesson with a discussion of the day’s topic followed by listening to a news story from the U.S.A. This approach will allow us to gain a better understanding of international perspectives and also to compare them with our own countries’.
After this, we will critically explore the issue. You will be asked to produce a short piece of work based upon the class’s topic - for example a short presentation, a summary or reaction paper. Such integrated skills will also come in useful for the TOEFL exam.
This is not a lecture-style course. Please envisage this classroom as a community where everybody has different strengths and weaknesses. By cooperating with each other, together we can overcome any difficulties.

| 第5回 | What’s happening to home? (2) | Second of two-week exploration into changing employment patterns. This class will include short presentations about the pros and cons of recent blurring of work/home distinctions. |
| 第6回 | Is autism underestimated? | Speculation on the reasons why autism is on the rise; the wider issue of “What is normal” or, perhaps more accurately, “Is there such a thing as ‘normal’?” |
| 第7回 | Medicine by the minute; Review and Exam. | Discussion on future advances in medicines and the limits of technology. |

学修効果を上げるため，教科書や配布資料等の該当箇所を参照し，「毎授業」授業内容に関する予習と復習（課題含む）をそれぞれ概ね100分を目安に行うこと。
