Course description and aims

 The main goal of this course is to send students to universities abroad so that they can improve their English language skills, especially the practical communication skills necessary for global scientists and engineers. In order to enhance students' learning, we will provide them with preparation sessions before they go abroad, and have them submit a report after they return to Tokyo Tech.
This course will give students a chance to try to improve their English language skills overseas, which they have learned within Japan.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
・Make presentations in English on topics of their own choosing.
・Communicate effectively in English.
・Understand cultures other than their own and introduce their own cultures to others.
・Deal with problems appropriately while studying abroad.

We will notify students of the dates and venues of the pre-study abroad sessions by email as soon as they are fixed.

Class 1 Orientation: briefing about documents regarding insurance, scholarships, request for approval to study abroad etc. Preparation session: mindset necessary for studying abroad, briefing about the country students will be visiting, risk management etc. (The number of the pre-study abroad sessions varies from one to five depending on the program. Details will be notified to the participants of each program.) Studying abroad writing a report

Assessment criteria and methods

grades obtained from courses taken abroad 50%, preparation sessions and a report written in Japanese 50%
Pass-fail grading system will be used. You cannot pass this course, if you fail to submit a report.

Prerequisites (i.e., required knowledge, skills, courses, etc.)

Participation in the specified study abroad program is required. Attend briefings on the program and apply for the program accordingly.Students are strongly advised to take English elective subjects in addition to this course before they go abroad.
