Course description and aims

All of the "Academic Presentation" courses are designed to provide students with the tools to deliver effective presentations with confidence. As these are practice-oriented courses, students will deliver multiple presentations throughout the term. Furthermore, students will sharpen their listening skills by learning how to ask good questions and become active listeners.

As an elective 300-level course, Academic Presentation 11 offers more challenging materials than the 200-level English Presentation Seminar courses. It equips students with the necessary skills to present ideas in a clear manner.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to deliver well-framed individual presentations followed by question and answer sessions, be aware of verbal and non-verbal messages while engaging the audience in their topics, and field questions from the audience.

Class flow

This class is designed to introduce students to the key points of presentation structure, as well as the key skills required to deliver a successful presentation. A variety of topics be introduced and discussed, and students will be expected to plan, practice, and deliver presentations based on these topics.

Class 1 Introduction to the Academic Presentation class. Students will introduce themselves, ask each other first meeting questions on a variety of topics, and study an example self-introduction text. Spoken fluency, vocabulary, presentation structure, reading
Class 2 Students will prepare, practice, and present their self-introduction following the 'Introduction / Body / Conclusion' structure, and then answer questions based on the content. Specific vocabulary, writing, spoken fluency, posture, eye contact, active listening
Class 3 Students will read and paraphrase example texts to prepare for a presentation about an important place, brainstorm ideas, and start to plan. Reading, spoken fluency, making notes
Class 4 Students will work on preparing a text for their presentation about an important place, and also practice some new key presentation skills: gestures and voice control. Writing, gestures, voice control
Class 5 Students will practice and deliver their presentation about an important place, followed by a question and answer exercise. Spoken fluency, posture, eye contact, gestures, voice control, active listening
Class 6 Students will read and paraphrase example texts of opinion presentations, choose a topic, and study specific language required. Reading, spoken fluency, specific vocabulary

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
