講義の概要とねらい
TOEFLのReadingとWritingの各セクションの試験形式・内容に留意しつつ、英語力を向上させる。
TOEFLのReading SectionおよびWriting Sectionの得点を向上させると共に、英語圏の大学で教育を受けるのに必要な英語力を身につけることを目指す。
到達目標
この授業科目は、次のような知識や能力を身につけることを目指す。
・readingおよびwriting セクションを中心にTOEFLテストで各自のスコアを向上させる。
・学問分野における英語の知識を広げると共に、英語の全般的なreadingとwritingの力を身につける。

| This course will be taught by a bilingual journalist who has been reporting and writing in both English and Japanese on a wide range of issues for a variety of publications. Throughout the course, the instructor will use her knowledge and expertise in the art of story-telling, to help students acquire communication skills that are necessary for presenting ideas effectively and clearly in English to people from culturally diverse backgrounds. |

授業の進め方
We continue to explore various issues using readings, audio lectures, and discussions. Students are expected to study the vocabulary, complete all readings, and come to class prepared to express their opinions. The class is highly interactive. In addition, there will be quizzes that are designed to help students expand their academic vocabulary.

| 第4回 | Reading Test #1 TOEFL writing strategy: Developing essay-writing skills | Students are expected to review the TOEFL question types 6, 7 and 8. |
| 第5回 | TOEFL reading Type 9: Summary questions Writing assignment (due Week 5) | Students will submit a short essay on a given topic. |
| 第6回 | TOEFL reading Type 10: Organization questions Exploring the TOEFL Integrated Writing Task | Students are responsible for completing the exercises on summary questions. |
| 第7回 | Class: Instructor feedback on the Writing assignment Reading Tests #2 | Students are expected to review all the materials covered in this quarter. |
授業時間外学修（予習・復習等）
学修効果を上げるため，教科書や配布資料等の該当箇所を参照し，「毎授業」授業内容に関する予習と復習（課題含む）をそれぞれ概ね100分を目安に行うこと。

成績評価の基準及び方法
The grade for the quarter will be determined as follows.
Class participation: 20% (Evaluation will be based on attitude, contribution, improvement, and a willingness to learn.)
Writing assignment: 40%
Reading Tests: 40%
