Course description and aims

Based on English 5, English 6 is designed to improve students’ English language skills for academic purposes and provide them with more knowledge in relevant areas. The materials include topics such as international and intercultural issues as well as current topics of science and technology. Expectations require students to practice: reading academic articles, listening to English lectures, speaking before an audience, and developing skills to write paragraphs and short essays.

・be able to better understand academic lectures
・practice effective reading strategies

Class flow

Three things to do before you come to the class
1. Prepare answers to the questions in ‘1. Setting the Scene’.
2. Answer questions in ‘2. Building Language’
3. Check the “Background Information”

Activities in class
1. Work in pairs or in the group of 3 to check answers of the homework
2. Watch the news report.
3. Answer questions in ‘3. Understanding Check 1’, ‘4. Understanding Check 2’ and ‘What do you remember?’
4. Watch the news report for the second time while filling the blanks.
5. Watch the news report for the third time and check the words in the blanks.
6. Go back to 3 and check answers.
(7. Answer questions in ‘6 Making a Summary)
8. Choose one of the questions in ‘7. Follow-up’, discuss in a group, and write/present a short summary of the discussion.

Out-of-Class Study Time (Preparation and Review)

To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
