Course description and aims

In keeping with their title, all of the “Oral Expression in English” courses are devoted to improving students’ skill in speaking. Apart from the context of making presentations, effective speaking also involves effective listening, so the classwork and homework in these courses require that students carry out both interactive speech and engaged listening exercises.

As an elective 200-level course, Oral Expression in English 8 maintains the objective of generating effective oral communication involving listening and speaking among members of groups of 3 or 4 people. Objectives also include using vocabulary and grammar introduced in the textbook and classes.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to hold interactive discussions on a range of topics among a group of 3, 4 or more of their peers.

Class flow

While we continue to use Keynote Advanced to explore a variety of issues, more emphasis is placed on group discussion throughout the course because this course is designed to help students develop skills that are becoming increasingly important in the global community: intercultural competence (the ability to work with people from culturally diverse backgrounds), active listening, and critical thinking. Students are expected to complete assignments, and come to class prepared for discussion. The class is highly interactive.

Class 2 Unit 8, "Working together" Students are responsible for studying the assigned unit before the class.
Class 3 Unit 9, "Stress and relaxation" Students are responsible for studying the assigned unit before the class.
Class 4 Midterm Presentation Presenters are responsible for preparing a presentation. Students will respond to each other's presentations.
Class 5 Unit 10, "Risk" Students are responsible for studying the assigned unit before the class.
Class 6 Unit 11, "Vision" Students are responsible for studying the assigned unit before the class.
Class 7 Unit 12, "The Future" Students are responsible for studying the assigned unit before the class.
Class 8 Final Presentation Students are responsible for preparing a presentation. Students will respond to each other's presentations.

Assessment criteria and methods

The grade for the quarter will be determined as follows:
Class participation: 30% (Evaluation will be based on attitude, contribution, improvement, and a willingness to learn. Absences and late arrivals will result in a lower grade.)
Midterm Presentation: 30%
Final Presentation: 40%
