  この授業は海外留学するのに必要な英語口頭表現力、特にディスカッションやプレゼンテーションの力を学生に身につけさせることを目標とする。

授業の進め方

Skills for Studying Abroad
This weeklong course will provide students with an introduction to some key skills for studying overseas. We will be exploring how-to-write a successful application letter, ways to prepare for the interview process and group academic talks. The course is aimed at students who may be considering a university-level course abroad, a shorter exchange program or a week-long study session.
Also these skills are transferable - they can be applied to job-hunting, too.

授業計画・課題

  授業計画 課題
第1回 Introduction + Class survey Outline of course and survey to ascertain participants' needs and expectations.
第2回 Interview skills: Background Introduction to interviews for study abroad programs and their similarities/differences with other forms of English communication (including job interviews).
第3回 Application essay: Exploring successful techniques We will explore three successful study abroad applications to enhance our understanding of what students should (and shouldn't) write.
第4回 Group presentation skills: Researching the issues Introduction to academic presentation skills for students who may not be aware of the conventions of such talks.
第5回 Interview skills: Key points We will build on the basic skills studied in Class 2 - including self-introductions, strong/weak points and how-to-discuss our academic histories.
第6回 Application essay: Planning the first draft Students will step out their application essay for an overseas university or internship. Instructor will offer individualised feedback.
第7回 Group presentation skills: Planning and practice We will continue building presentation skills with a particular focus on how to navigate the middle part of the presentation - a stage in which presenters sometimes lose track of their purpose.
第8回 Interview skills: Dealing with difficult questions Following an exploration of how to remain calm and confident during stressful interviews, students will have the opportunity to practice full interviews with classmates.
第9回 Application essay: The second draft Prior to Class 7, students will have submitted the first draft of their application essays. In this class, the instructor will offer both group and solo advice on how to improve the next draft which is due on the final day of this course.
第10回 Group presentation skills: The Conclusion The conclusion of a presentation offers speakers the opportunity to call their audience to action and leave a long-lasting impression. But all too often, presenters' final messages are underwhelming. This class explores effective ways to end a public talk.
第11回 Planning and practice time: Interviews What interviewees do prior and following interviews is often as important as what occurs during them. This class will conclude our workshop on interview skills as well as allowing students a final opportunity to practice before tomorrow's assessed simulation.
第12回 Group presentation skills: Questions and Answers, Final rehearsal This class will explore cultural differences between attitudes to asking questions. It will also serve as a last chance for students to practice their presentations - and listen to the instructor's feedback - prior to tomorrow's assessment.
第13回 Group presentations Students will be assessed on how well they have integrated the previous four days' skills.
第14回 Interview simulations Students will engage in a simulated interview for an academic institution / internship of their choice.
第15回 Course feedback - counseling and comments Instructor will return draft 2 of the application essays (submitted before Class 13) and offer group and individual feedback on learners' strengths and how they might build upon their weaknesses in the future. Students will also offer (anonymous) feedback on how this course might be improved in future.
