Course description and aims

All of the “Oral Expression in English” courses are devoted to improving students’ skills in speaking. Apart from the context of giving presentations, effective speaking also involves effective listening, so the classwork and homework in these courses require that students engaged in speech and listening exercises.

As an elective 100-level course, Oral Expression in English 3 offers structured study based on textbook exercises, and like Oral Expression in English 1 and 2, has a specific focus on generating effective oral communication involving listening and speaking between pairs of speakers. Objectives also include using vocabulary and grammar introduced in the textbook and classes.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to confidently discuss a selection of topics to do with daily life and society and cross-cultural phenomena in one-on-one conversations with people they have not met before.

Class flow

Attendance is taken at each class. Students are required to listen to and/or read assigned materials before class, preparing for focused discussions of their content. (Note: Assignments turned in late are penalized. Syllabus is subject to change based on the levels, needs, and actual number of students.)

Class 4 Individual Presentations and Papers: Talk about a person or fictional character who inspires you Deliver a 2~3 minute presentation on a real or fictional person who has influenced you. or fictional person who has influenced you. Submit the presentation script.
Class 5 Unit 4: Secrets and Lies Acquire vocabulary, phrases, and concepts relevant for discussing secrets and lies.
Class 6 Unit 5: To the Edge Acquire vocabulary, phrases, and concepts relevant for discussing accomplishments.
Class 7 Unit 6: Money Matters Acquire vocabulary, phrases, and concepts relevant for discussing money matters. Articulate ideas and opinions on issues.
Class 8 Group Presentations and Papers: Describe a charitable project Collaborate with classmates to present on a charitable project. Submit the presentation script.
