Course description and aims
Based on English 7, English 8 is designed to improve students’ English language skills for academic purposes and provide them with more knowledge in relevant areas. The materials include topics such as international and intercultural issues as well as current topics of science and technology. Expectations require students to practice: reading academic articles, listening to English lectures, speaking before an audience, and developing skills to write paragraphs and short essays.

Class flow
The focus of this course is advanced speaking and listening skills. We will use the text book and videos selected by the teacher to engage with diverse and challenging topics. There will be many chances to practise speaking in different contexts, including pair, small groups, and in front of the entire class. The students will have a chance to express their opinions and listen to each other as well as contribute to the direction of the learning itself. We will revisit each of the four sections of the textbook and choose chapters of interest together.

Assessment criteria and methods
Four presentations over the eight weeks will account for 80 percent of the final grade.
20 percent will be class participation and effort.
