Course description and aims

Students in this course will read texts that lead to an understanding of the rich Anglophone cultures, and taking that as a starting point for debate, will discover the various aspects of Anglophone culture.

The purpose of this course is to train students to read high-quality texts for their research.

Student learning outcomes

At the end of this course students will be able to:
・grasp the exact meaning of texts written in English.
・analyze texts critically.

Class flow

For each of the units in the textbook, students are required to read the unit and solve the exercise problems before coming to the class. The instructor will explain the background of famous speeches delivered in English-speaking countries, making sure that the students understand the meaning of the texts, and show solutions to the exercise problems. Cultural implications of each speech will be discussed. The students will also watch news video clips from the English-speaking countries and discuss them.
