Course description and aims

All of the "Academic Presentation" courses are designed to provide students with the tools to deliver effective presentations with confidence. As these are practice-oriented courses, students will deliver multiple presentations throughout the term. Furthermore, students will improve their listening skills by learning how to ask good questions and become active listeners.

As a 300-level elective course, Academic Presentation 10 offers more challenging contents than the 200-level English Presentation Seminar courses. It equips students with the necessary skills to present ideas in a clear manner.

Student learning outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to deliver well-framed individual presentations being aware of verbal and non-verbal messages while engaging the audience, followed by a question and answer session, fielding questions from the audience.

Class flow

Attendance is taken at each class. For each class, students are expected to complete the homework in advance and actively participate in class discussions. Students will deliver a presentation after every other unit, receiving feedback back from their colleagues and instructor. (Note: Assignments turned in late are penalized. Syllabus is subject to change based on the levels, needs, and actual number of students.)

Class 2 Unit 10: For example… Illustrate concepts using examples. Compare and contrast patterns to explain ideas.
Class 3 Unit 9, 10 Presentation Unit 11: Make a stand, hold your ground! Deliver a presentation. Employ active and passive voice. Apply persuasion techniques (point and counterpoint).
Class 4 Unit 12: Measuring solutions, solving problems Evaluate evidence to persuade and problem solve. Apply "Rule of Three" to make your speech memorable!
Class 5 Unit 11, 12 Presentation Unit 13: Lies & statistics Deliver a presentation. Create stimulating and memorable visual aids.
Class 6 Unit 14: Picture this! Unit 15: Common ground Practice appealing to emotions using visual aids. Present a point by using quotes. Evaluate information.
Class 7 Unit 16: In conclusion… Unit 17: Any questions? Categorize elements of the Conclusion. Prepare for Q&A.
Class 8 Unit 17: Any questions? Final Presentation Prepare for Q&A. Deliver Final Presentation. Identify course aims.
