Course description and aims

Overview 　In this lecture, first let students deepen their basic understanding of "media". Then learn about the significance of media and journalism in the field of science and technology. The 21st century is the era when science and technology have the leading role. That is why science and technology and its achievements are constantly gaining attention as media coverage. People involved in science and technology are required to have advanced media adaptability. They are also required to actively disseminate information via media. Therefore, anyone who walks in the path of science and technology needs to acquire media literacy. In this lecture, I will cover actual stories of accidents and incidents related to science and technology, and consider the relationship between science & technology and media. Learn the basics of "science journalism" where trained scientists report the stories. In the lecture, media personnel and journalists engaged in the work of science and technology coverage will be invited.

Aims Have the students acquire the basic education about the media and have them deepen their understanding of the relationship between science and media. Ask them to deepen their understanding of science journalism and to be able to disseminate information themselves.

Class flow

Starting in Quarter 3, 2022, this class will be face-to-face.
The class will be face-to-face on Mondays and Thursdays at 8:50 a.m. in Room W241, West Bldg. 2. There will be no class on ZOOM.
Please be sure to come to the university.

No textbook will be used, but reference books will be clearly indicated. PowerPoint, video, and audio will be used in class.

Please submit a "Report" with your student ID number, affiliation system, and name" via T2SCOLA after attending each class.
That will be your attendance and evaluation points.
Attendance will be taken by presenting the URL and QR code of the Google Form in class each time and having the students access that form. This Google Form comes with a "questionnaire" each time. This questionnaire will be used for the next class, so please make sure to answer it. So please be sure to bring a computer, smartphone, or tablet device with internet access to class.
Each class will be graded on a 400+ word reflection sheet to be submitted in T2SCALA.
The deadline for submission is midnight of the day of the class.
Please write your reflections on the class on this reflection sheet. If you do not submit the reflection sheet, you will not receive any points even if you only attended the class. Please be careful.
The final exam will be a report. No exam will be given.
The assignment for the final report will be presented after some progress of the class.
