Overview: In this lecture, we will deepen comprehensive understanding of the concept of "media". Normally, "media" means "mass media" such as television, newspapers, magazines, radio, web news etc. However, due to the penetration of the Internet and the spread of PCs, mobile phones, smartphones, etc., It became "an era where anyone can become media" that can also receive and transmit information. Everyone was a media consumer and at the same time became a sender. Based on that, we learn the history and current state of mass media, the mechanism and features of new media services such as SNS, the current state of how individuals and organizations behave as media, and acquire basic knowledge on the media.
Aims: Media Study is generally regarded as a liberal arts subject, but the current media is based on IT. For those engaged in the media business, those from science and technology courses at universities and graduate schools stand out. Furthermore, in the case of research workers, the ability to transmit information as media itself is required. Therefore, it is the aim of this lecture to have students of Tokyo Institute of Technology acquire the basic knowledge and a culture of the media.
① Understand the basic concept of media. ② Understand that the mass media have undergone significant changes due to the appearance of the Internet. ③ Understand the current situation that all individuals and organizations became media. ④ Understand the basics of the business model of media. ⑤ Understand the importance of science journalism. ⑥ Understand the relationship among media, science and technology.

It has not yet been determined whether the fourth quarter classes at the university will be face-to-face classes in a classroom or remote classes via Zoom.
At this time, we will inform you of the remote class format via ZOOM.
Each class will be a live remote lecture using ZOOM.
We are also planning to have live lectures by guest lecturers.
The same ZOOM address will be used for each class. The class will be open 10 minutes before the start of the class for attendance purposes.
The textbook will not be used, but reference books will be provided. Power point, video, and audio will be used in class.
Each lecture will be recorded by ZOOM and uploaded to youtube (guest lecturers may not upload their lectures). After attending each class, please submit a "report" via T2SCOLA with your student number, affiliation, and name. That will be your attendance and evaluation points.
You will have the opportunity to complete a Google Form survey in class.
In some cases, we will do group work using breakout rooms in class.
In some cases, I will appoint students to give presentations or express their opinions in class. You do not need to show your face, but please speak up when you are asked.
Students who cannot access zoom or cannot play videos due to inadequate internet access or other reasons will be able to ask questions via email. Please let us know.
*This lecture introduces many of the latest media contents. Among them, contents that cannot be used under copyright law are usually included on youtube. Currently, this kind of content can be used only for university teaching purposes. Public disclosure is a violation of copyright law. By law, there are two things you absolutely must not do. (1) Publish the URL of the lesson or tell the people (2) Record the lesson contents, take screenshots, and publish it in some way, or tell the people. All of the above are in violation of copyright law and will be severely punished. If such a case is revealed, the university has no choice but to deal with it. Please be careful.
