This course of lectures focuses on sociological perspectives that explain the relation between personal problems and social issues. The aims of the course are 1)understanding basic concepts, terms, theories, and methods of sociology, 2)learning sociological perspectives on familiar topics with specific examples and concrete data.
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1) Understand the basic concepts, terms, theories, and methods of sociology.
2) Acquire the sense of "sociological imagination".
3) Explain the social problems in present-day Japan from a sociological point of view, using examples and data logically.

This course consists of lectures combined with discussions in small groups, presentations, and the like. Some student have to write the resume, report the content of the textbook. Lecturer will complement additionally in the discussion to understand further. Students must prepare the class.
Should the number of applicants for this course exceed the limit, a lottery system will be used to determine which students are admitted. Be sure to attend the first class.

Class 1 | · Details of the operation of the class will be given in the first class. · As a general rule, participants will be required to prepare and submit a chapter resume per week. The volume of the resume should be approximately 4 pages in A4 size. · This class is what is called flipped learning. The first three sessions are orientation and lectures. The next four weeks will be a set of exercises, lectures, and resume writing. The next week will be conducted with theme selection and discussion for the final assignment. A summary session will be conducted at the end. · GoogleClassroom will be used for the Learning Management System. · The final report requires the writing of a 4000-word report on one or more of the following topics: urban, cultural, family, theory, or other. To enhance effective learning, students are encouraged to spend approximately 100 minutes preparing for class and another 100 minutes reviewing class content afterwards (including assignments) for each class.
They should do so by referring to textbooks and other course material.
