Course description and aims

This course focuses on the originality and significance of the expression format of fiction. Fiction is “one way of communication by written word”, but is different from newspapers columns and criticism. At the same time, they are not simply a story, information, nor a lesson. We will compare other arts such as music and images to analyze and verify the originality of novels and its structure.
This course’s aim is to take away the authoritative view students have that fiction is “difficult and sophisticated” as preparation before reading literary fiction, and for students to think by themselves “What is fiction in the first place?”

Student learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

1) Explain the originality of expression in fiction with examples.
2) Have an understanding of fiction, images, drama, and music as an artistic way of expression and based on this, explain the relation between each.
3) Acquire a flexible understanding without the stereotypical authoritative views of the novel.
